He chose to serve the Guédé, he had been brought up to love them and fear them. He had chosen to serve Papa Legba and Lemanjá over the Baron. He had chosen to remain neutral in an entire House of shifting alliances and loyalties.

But now he had no choice.

His mother had thrown her lot in with Voldemort, something that he could simply not do. Voldemort required total allegiance; he would suffer no other previous claim, blood, familial, or other. That was the major reason that Blaise had never joined with him. He offered that sort of devotion to the Guédé and the Guédé alone. But his mother’s choice had forced him to make one of his own, to break out of his comfortable neutrality and join with the “Light” side in an effort both to preserve his own skin and because he knew that sooner or later, Voldemort would fall and in doing so, take all of his followers down with him. He had no wish to be caught in that maelstrom. Better to join with Potter and his ilk now, then to risk losing everything in the end.

It was a choice he did not particularly enjoy, but a necessary one.

This idiotic blood purity issue, on the one hand you had the pureblooded population rapidly marrying and breeding themselves into extinction simply because there was no fresh blood being brought into the bloodlines. No fresh blood, no fresh magic, and their magic was going a bit stale, to put it one way. On the other hand, you had the Muggleborns, who had no idea of what a true magical society was like and tried with a small measure of success to mesh their two worlds together. Sometimes it worked, more often than not, it didn’t, and the Muggleborns returned dissatisfied to the Muggle world.

This was a true pity, simply because of all of the magical potential that was going to waste out there in the Muggle world, but when the society itself was geared towards a pro-pureblooded agenda, no matter what the Ministry of Magic tried to claim. Perhaps what was truly needed was a shift of focus within the government, making it less of an aristocratic bureaucracy and more of a meritocracy. It was interesting to think that this one aspect of magical society really was the aspect on which all the others hinged on. Wasn’t anything more than wishful thinking; the present government was far too set in its ways to even presume to contemplate something as radical as this.

The only real chance for change would be if Potter decided to take up politics after defeating the Dark Lord, but if he’d read the Golden Boy of Gryffindor correctly then Potter had just about as much as he could take of this world. He wouldn’t put it past the Boy-Who-Lived to leave this place completely after he defeated Voldemort, to maybe settle on some island somewhere and live a completely boring normal life.

After all, it was something he himself had considered from time to time.

Worst quality?

I have a deep seated fear of commitment and of letting anyone see the real me. At least that is what this Muggle psychologist told me once over drinks in a café when I was in America visiting Tante Marie and Maman. Apparently brought on by my unorthodox upbringing and lack of a secure solid father figure, I just shrugged and bought another round of drinks for us. She didn’t mind.

I also have a rather severe sort of life dependency on coffee. I can’t live without at the ultimate minimum, one cup a day. Other than that, I don’t know if I have a worst quality. I’ve never had any complaints from my female companions…ever. Granted none of them have lasted longer than a week or two, but none of them ever complained.
